SMART MATERIALS AND SMART STRUCTURES
ABSTRACT
The entire world is changing at a faster rate and to
cope up with this change applying modern technology is a must to live up to the
standard. Infrastructure plays a vital role and this is possible by
construction of smart structures.
A smart structure speaks about how the construction
works can be done effectively and efficiently. The four scarce resources man,
machine, material and money are to be utilized very effectively to achieve the
best result, i.e. to complete the construction works with the right quality
taking into considerations the safety to living at top most priority. These
things can be made into reality by making use of computers and digital signal
processing
An earthquake is one of the most terrifying
phenomena that nature can dish up. We generally think of the ground as “rock
solid” and completely stable. An earthquake can shatter that perception
instantly, and often with extreme violence.
Up until relatively recently scientists only had
unsubstantiated guesses as to what actually caused earthquakes. Even today
there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding them, but have
scientists have a much clear understanding.
There
has been enormous progress in the past century. Scientists have identified the
forces that cause earthquakes, and developed technology that can tell us an
earthquake’s magnitude and origin.
“Necessity is the Mother of Invention”
This
paper deals mainly with the approach of MR fluid during earthquake. In addition
to the above; the examples of the application of smart materials in the bridges
are also explained. Now a day, smart structures are very useful in structural
health monitoring & damage detection. Finally, we conclude that the
application of smart materials will definitely enhance the quality of our life.
